The success of Tesla Model S and stricter emissions standards around the world has spurred carmakers to plan numerous plug-in their own electric models.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles considers making an electric version of its Maserati Alfieri sports car, Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne said recently in an interview.
Maserati Company is reportedly planning to take as a base the Alfieri sports car concept that debuted at 2014 Geneva Motor Show. According to preliminary information, the sports coupe will be on the market in 2018 and the electric sports car wouldn’t arrive until after 2019, the year when Sergio Marchionne retires as CEO of Fiat Chrysler. The sports car debut was confirmed during the May 2014 announcement of Fiat Chrysler’s current five-year plan.
The FCA chief executive also revealed that the automaker is working on producing a compact electric city car for the European market. The Fiat-badged car would be the first electric model sold in the region.
Most of the fleet of Fiat vehicles would be hybdrids by 2025, Marchionne announced last November. He promised the carmaker will introduce more hybrid vehicles. Earlier this year, Maserati chief executive Harald Wester said that the company will offer hybrid version of every model it makes to meet emission targets by 2021. The first of those plug-in hybrids could be a version of Miserati’s new SUV, the Levante.
Fiat currently sells an electric version of its iconic 500 only in Oregon and California. In 2014, Marchionne complained that the automaker is losing $10,000 on every 500e it sells to satisfy California’s zero-emission vehicle mandate.
