World’s first flying car that can turn into a plane and can fly at 100mph is going on sale in the US next month.
The two-seat hybrid electric vehicle is manufactured by Terrafugia, owned by the parent company of Volvo. It can switch between driving and flying modes in less than a minute.
The price has not yet been determined but preliminary sales for the first of the pioneering models will begin next month, according to China’s news agency.
According to manufacturer Terrafugia, which belongs to Volvo, the Transition can fly up to 400 miles. The aircraft has fold-out wings and weighs roughly 1,300 pounds. It has fixed landing gear and can fly to a maximum altitude of 10,000 feet.
TF-X has fold-out wings with twin electric motors attached to each end and has a 500-mile flight range. The motors allow the aircraft to move from a vertical to a horizontal position powered by a 300 hp engine.
The planned four-person TF-X will be semi-autonomous and computer-controlled so that travelers can only type in a destination before taking off. The vehicles will be capable of automatically avoiding other air traffic, bad weather, and restricted airspace. It will be able to recharge its batteries either from its engine or by plugging into electric car charging stations.
The vehicle has also been fitted with a hybrid-electric motor, luggage storage, rear-view cameras, and a new parachute system, as well as ‘boost’ mode, which gives ‘a brief burst of extra power while flying’.
Certified as a Light Sports Aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration in 2016, the vehicle also meets National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration standards but consumers will need a pilot’s license to operate the TF-X.
