A BritishTesla owner has been banned from driving for 18 months for climbing into the passenger seat of his Model S after turning on its semi-autonomous feature. Tesla instructs its drivers to keep hands on the steering wheel while Autopilot is engaged.

A shocked witness, who was a passenger in another car, caught a video as the vehicle went past.

Bhavesh Patel, aged 39, of Alfreton Road, Nottingham was spotted in the passenger seat of his Model S with his hands behind his head – while the steering wheel was left unmanned.

Patel pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at St Albans Crown Court on Friday, April 20. The Hertfordshire Police noted that the car was set to drive at 40 mph, and that Patel had left the steering wheel and controls unattended, and that there was heavy traffic on the road at the time of the incident.

The Hertfordshire Police said Patel was “grossly irresponsible,” and that his actions could have resulted in his own death or that of other motorists. Officials from Tesla said during his court hearing that the feature isn’t meant to replace a driver, and they recommend drivers to keep hands on the steering wheel while Autopilot is turned on.
