Google and Ford are in talks on self-driving car partnership.

According to sources familiar with the plans, the second-largest U.S. automaker, Ford Motor Co is set to form a deal with Google’s parent firm, the search engine giant Alphabet Inc about forming a partnership to develop autonomous car technology.

the two companies will announce a joint venture at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2016, said a person familiar with the talks.It will be the first commercial self-driving partnership for Alphabet. The two sides have been talking for months, the source said.

Ford is planning to combine its expertise in automotive design with Google’s skills in selfdriving technology. By the new partnership, Ford hopes to get a massive boost in autonomous driving software development. The automaker has been experimenting with its own systems for more than 10 years; besides, it has revealed plans this month to begin testing on public streets in California. On the other hand, Google is a pioneer in autonomous car field with 53 test vehicles on the road in California and Texas and 1.3 million miles logged in autonomous driving. The search-engine giant would also benefit from the partnership with the automaker as it will avoid spending billions of dollars and many years in building its own automotive manufacturing expertise.

Fully autonomous cars could prevent thousands of crashes, deaths and injuries. They also would reduce oil use through better traffic management and extend personal mobility to people unable to drive.
